In an open letter sent to Tinubu, the students union in a bold move has written to the president of the federal republic of Nigeria on the power supply at the university college hospital Ibadan.
The letter reads “OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, BOLA AHMED TINUBU, PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE DEPLORABLE STATE OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL (UCH) “
“IBADAN Aluta Salutation to you from Kunle Adepeju Building, University of Ibadan. Mr president, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union writes to call your attention to the deplorable state of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and other health facilities in Nigeria due to the persistent power outages that have made the delivery of quality health-care services nearly impossible”.
“We find it deeply disconcerting that UCH has experienced a blackout for over two consecutive months, leaving critical departments and life-saving services in a dire state this, including the education of the University of Ibadan student-doctors resident in Alexander Brown Hall”.
“We also find it particularly disturbing that amidst growing concerns about the shortage of doctors in Nigeria, the very doctors of tomorrow, who are studying in the University Teaching Hospital, are subjected to deplorable learning conditions”.
” The lack of electricity makes it nearly impossible for these students to assimilate their lectures, and gain necessary hands-on experience in clinical practice. This situation is not only detrimental to their education but also undermines the critical task of preparing them to bolster Nigeria’s struggling healthcare system”.
“The genesis of this problem can be traced to the price reforms introduced by the Ministry of Power in April 2024, which resulted in an astronomical increase in the cost of electricity. Your excellency, we hold that this policy is fundamentally anti-people, as it disproportionately affects the poor and vulnerable who already struggle to afford basic amenities”.
” Furthermore, healthcare institutions like UCH, which serve as a lifeline for millions, are crippled by the soaring costs of electricity, therefore denying Nigerians access to much-needed adequate care. As such, we give the Federal Government a 7-day ultimatum to address these pressing issue”.
” Failure to act within this stipulated time will leave us with no option but to mobilize and protest against this continuous neglect by the government. We call for immediate intervention on the matter of the disastrous blackout that is currently bedeviling the University College Hospital(UCH) in order to ensure that our health-care providers get to protect and save the lives they pledged to save and to keep our health-care system from the current full-on nosedive that it is on”.
