Pastor Wale Adefarasin, Senior Pastor of Guiding Light Assembly, has dismissed US claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, stating that violence against Christians in northern Nigeria is not new and doesn’t amount to genocide. He questioned the US motives, suggesting economic interests, such as Nigeria’s reduced reliance on crude oil exports and its deposits of minerals essential for electric vehicles, might be driving their stance.
Adefarasin emphasized that killings of Christians in southern Kaduna and Plateau have persisted for decades, and the West’s portrayal of the situation is misleading. He also pointed out that the US is threatening military action if the Nigerian government fails to protect Christians, raising concerns about external interference.
The Nigerian government has rejected Trump’s narrative, asserting that the constitution upholds religious freedom and prioritizes interfaith harmony. Massad Boulos, US Senior Adviser, has also denied genocide claims, stating that terrorism affects both Christians and Muslims, and Boko Haram and ISIS have killed more Muslims than Christians.
