Akeem Abas, son of the Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council.
The keenly contested election was held on Monday at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, drawing members from across the state’s media landscape.
Akeem, a seasoned journalist and former Secretary of the council, defeated his rival in a smooth electoral process that observers described as peaceful and transparent.
Akeem polled a total votes of 143, while others contenders like Raji who polled 118.
Akeem who has pledged to reposition the union, prioritize welfare, professional development, and press freedom, and ensure unity among media practitioners in the state.
