The Federal Government has officially concluded negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), leading to a new agreement that includes a 40% salary increase for university lecturers nationwide.
The deal, which marks the end of the long-awaited renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, introduces major reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s university system.
Key highlights include:
- 40% salary raise for academic staff, effective January 1, 2026
- Professors to receive pension equivalent to their annual salary upon retirement at age 70
- Dedicated university funding model, covering research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff development
- Creation of a National Research Council (NRC) to receive at least 1% of Nigeria’s GDP for research funding
- Stronger university autonomy and academic freedom
- Academic leadership positions (Deans/Provosts) to be elected and restricted to professors
- No victimization of staff involved in previous union activities
The agreement will be reviewed every three years. Stakeholders have hailed the development as a major step toward restoring stability and quality in Nigerian universities.
